The House of Lords Select Committee of Social Mobility needs your help

The House of Lords Select Committee of Social Mobility has now published its call for evidence. The Committee, appointed to investigate the transition from school to work for young people, is investigating the complex choices young people are faced with when considering career options.

Further to the call for evidence, they have developed a survey for young people aged 14-24. The survey can be found here:

To Those Sitting Exams…

To everyone sitting exams or assessments,

We  know how hard you are all working but wanted to remind you of something that we hope you will remember throughout the next few weeks and always; Whatever test or exam you are taking, it can’t possibly assess what makes you so special and unique. The people who make these tests and score them do not know you the way your youth workers and teachers do and they certainly don’t know you in the way your friends and family do.

They do not know that some of you speak different languages, or that sometimes you volunteer, or that some of you are young carers.  They do not know that you were there for your friend when they were going through a hard time or that you picked up that little animal and moved it to a safer place.

They do not know your natural talent for acting, singing, public speaking or making people laugh. They can’t know from the test that people just feel good when you are around…but perhaps you don’t know that yet either.

They don’t know that your friends count on you and that your smile brightens up so many people’s day.  They do not know that you are kind and trustworthy and that every day (well most), you do the best that you can do.

For sure exams tell people something about you but they don’t tell everything and depending on your perspective, they miss out some of the  most important bits! There are many ways of being smart and showing your intelligence so during this intense time of revision and sitting exams, remember there is no way to ‘test’ all of the amazing and awesome things that make you, YOU!

Gerald Granston Art and Poetry Competition

Inspired by the Gerald Granston Lecture, St Alban’s Youth Council are delighted to announce the SAYC Gerald Granston Art and Poetry Competition.

Artists aged 11-25 are invited to submit up to two works entitled;

‘When we Demonise Each Other’


‘Different Backgrounds, Same Community’

Artists can use the following mediums: Painting, drawing, sculpture, photographs, textiles, poetry.

Works must be original and the artists own.

Five Ways to Wellbeing Conference

Six of our members attended the Five Ways to Wellbeing Conference on Thursday 22 January. Ellie Webb, Jamie Bootle, Harry Derbyshire, Eleanor Hynes, Kieran Zielinski and Charles Edwards gave a key note presentation and a workshop to a packed house of practitioners, Councillors and HCC Officers, including Richard Roberts, Jenny Cole and Lyndsey Edwards.

The group delivered a powerful workshop that highlighted the gap in provision between a young person seeking support from their GP for a mental health issue and any meaningful help starting.  They asked delegates to consider how they could use their expertise and circle of influence to provide a safety net for young people during this time.

Three passionate table debates ensued as delegates were challenged to consider, what to change, what to change to and how to cause the change.Displaying DSC_0095.JPGDisplaying DSC_0093.JPGDisplaying DSC_0096.JPG

  •  ‘Really interesting to hear the Youth Council express views on this’
  •  ‘Great presentation! I will take back with me a better understanding of what/how the youth feel.’
  •  ‘An amazing and incredible presentation, very educational – I will continue to go into schools and push awareness of the support services available’
  •  ‘Thank you so much for the well informed positive session.  I will be taking a lot of the information discussed and I will work with those schools I’m in to effect some change’

We ended the afternoon by delivering a keynote speech that highlighted how Youth Councils and Youth Engagement  Groups (such as Herts 1125) provide activities that give young people the opportunity to be active, take notice, learn, connect and give – the five ways to well-being in accord with Thrive and the Penn Resilience Programme.

At the end of the afternoon delegates were asked what they had enjoyed most about the day, we were so surprised but to our delight, most people said they had most enjoyed our workshop or speech.

It was great to get this opportunity but even better to know that we made such a strong impression and people enjoyed hearing form us.

We look forward to the seeing some positive outcomes as a result.
